Miami Marlins Trade Shocker

Thursday, November 15th, 2012

What a difference a year makes? After netting some of the top free agents last winter, the Miami Marlins are back to square one. In a blockbuster of a trade, the Marlins have shipped shortstop Jose Reyes, right-hander Josh Johnson, left-hander Mark Buehrle, catcher John Buck and outfielder Emilio Bonifacio to the Toronto Blue Jays. The Marlins are receiving seven players in the trade, but most importantly they are dumping $175 million in payroll. You can rub your eyes all you want, but this ridiculous waving of the white flag is for real.

When the Marlins moved to Miami, Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria wanted to make a splash. With a new stadium, snazzy new uniforms, increased payroll and a new manager, the Marlins were ready to come out of the shadows and finally become an elite MLB team. But baseball insiders could not have guessed how doomed this sinking ship was. After a rocky start with manager Ozzie Guillen, the year only got worse. With a last place 93-loss season, Loria and crew were ready to throw up their hands and admit defeat. Loria is known for slashing and burning payroll, but their fall from grace is unprecedented.

Loria pleaded with MLB to move the team to Miami. MLB, justifiably so, was a little weary to grant the relocation. Marlins in years past have been cheap on payroll and have not invested well in the team, despite winning two World Series in their franchises history. Loria promised Commissioner Bud Selig the move to Miami would grant them a bigger market and Selig allowed the move.

Loria played the city of Miami and Major League Baseball for a fool. All the players they spent money on are gone, their attendance will surely drop and the city of Miami is still on the hook to pay for the Marlins swanky new stadium. This trade sends ripple effects through the league as MLB will now be more cautious when granting teams permission to build new stadiums or move. Loria has become the joke of the league and it’s sad to see this team will be stuck in limbo for the coming years.

Hey if there is one silver lining in all of this, the Marlins are the most talked about team two winters in a row.

Time for the MLB Playoffs

Wednesday, October 3rd, 2012

Hey baseball fans, it’s game 162 today, and we are looking at two open division races and a battle for home field advantage. We could have a one game playoff between the New York Yankees and Baltimore Orioles. Today’s matchup between the Texas Rangers and the Oakland A’s decides the AL West. All of that before we get into the new one game wildcard round. What a thrilling way to end the season! With the new rules for the baseball postseason, we have five teams qualify in each league, instead of the traditional four. The three division winners will sit back and watch the one game playoff between the top two wildcard teams. Once that game concludes, we’ll be down to four teams in each league, and the playoffs will continue as they have in the past.

The NL is all set, but the playoff matchups can change based on what happens today. However, the AL is still up in the air. Here’s a breakdown of the playoff races so far:

AL Division Champs:
Detroit Tigers

AL Playoff Teams:
Texas Rangers
Oakland A’s
New York Yankees
Baltimore Orioles

NL Division Champs:
Cincinnati Reds
Washington Nationals
San Francisco Giants

NL Wildcard Teams:
St. Louis Cardinals
Atlanta Braves

Postseason gear is now available for all the playoff qualifiers, but if you are a fan of one of the teams still battling for their division crown, I suggest waiting to see what plays out today. I’m sure you’ll want division champs gear if your team wins. Either way, keep up with the postseason here at FansEdge and sport some new gear to root your team on to the World Series. Good luck!

Dodgers in Disarray

Monday, January 9th, 2012

The Dodgers ownership regime of the past eight seasons has been seen as a black eye on a very historic and legendary franchise. Owner Frank McCourt and his wife Jamie had purchased the team in 2004 and although the team has made the playoffs four times out of the eight seasons, the McCourt’s messy divorce in 2010 has left the Dodgers organization in disarray.

But all is not lost for this historic franchise, as a cavalcade of celebrities have lined up to become potential owners of the team. Such names as former Dodgers manager Joe Torre, Magic Johnson, Larry King, Mark Cuban and former Dodgers pitcher Orel Hershiser are all trying to purchase the team.
This turn of events has led Dodgers fan to become hopeful for the direction of the organization, as their on the field future looks just as bright. The Dodgers have re-signed superstar outfielder Matt Kemp to an eight year contract, and have additionally signed free agent pitchers Aaron Harang, Chris Capuano and utility man Jerry Hairston Jr. to help build for the upcoming season. The McCourt era of the Dodgers is coming to a close and a promising future is on the horizon.

Shop all Los Angeles Dodgers merchandise and look forward to the future, as spring training is less than two months away!
